Rakesh, Hamza sparkle

KOCHI: Leggie Rakesh and mediumpacer Hamza Kunju took four wickets each as host Muthoot ECC `B' thrashed Centurion CC (Ernakulam) by seven wickets and entered the pre-quarterfinals of the first Muthoot Pappachan Foundation all-Kerala Twenty20 cricket tournament at the Nehru Stadium here on Tuesday.

In another match, Century CC, riding on fine performances from Madan Mohan (4-8), G.P.Unnikrishnan (42 n.o.) and Abhishek Hegde (44 n.o.), drubbed Aluva CC by nine wickets. Former India player Abey Kuruvilla inaugurated the five-day event.

The scores (first round):

Centurion CC, Ernakulam 114 in 18.2 overs (Priyaranjan 43, Rakesh four for 15, Hamza four for 26) lost to Muthoot ECC `B', Ernakulam 116 for three in 17.2 overs (Sareesh 34 n.o.).

Cordiant TCC `B', Tripunithura 142 for eight in 20 overs (Umesh 38, M. Manoj three for 17) bt Players, Chittoor 89 in 17.5 overs.

Aluva CC 100 in 18.5 overs (M. Jojo 40, Madan Mohan four for 8) lost to Century CC, Ernakulam 101 for one in 11 overs (G.P. Unnikrishnan 42 n.o., Abhishek Hegde 44 n.o.).

Cricket selection trials

The trials to select the Pathanamthitta district under-17 cricket team will be held at the Mar Thoma College stadium, Pathanamthitta, at 9 a.m. on Thursday. Those who are born on or after 1-9-1990 are eligible. Interested should report to Sunil Koshy George, secretary, PDCA, in whites and with proof of age.

Kerala boys regain title

Kerala upset defending champion Andhra Pradesh 29-20, 29-24 to win the boys title in the 26th National sub-junior ball badminton championship at Bikaner. The team, led by Ninjel P. Dev and coached by Sunil Lal, regained the title after a decade.

Kerala girls finished fourth in the championship. Kerala's Manumohan, Ninjel P. Dev in the boys section and P. Shalu in girls were awarded the `Star of India' titles for outstanding performances at the event.

Beach volleyball

The Ernakulam District beach volleyball championship, for men and women, will be held at the Cherai Beach, near Kochi, on May 23 and 24. Interested players may contact the Ernakulam District Volleyball Association secretary Xavier Luiz (Ph: 9895302411) on or before May 17.

The Ernakulam team for the State championship, to be held in Thrissur's Mathalagam Beach, will be picked from this event.
