Impressive wins for Meenakshi, Vijayalakshmi

NEW DELHI: S. Vijayalakshmi and S. Meenakshi carved out impressive victories in the fourth round of the Liechtenstein Open chess tournament in Triesen, Switzerland, on Monday.

Vijayalakshmi offered a rook for a bishop on the 15th move and then played aggressively throughout the 43-move game against Germany's Rainer Schmidt. She chased the rival king vigorously and eventually trapped it in a checkmating net with the help of queen and bishop.

Meenakshi, too, got a position to her liking and nailed Dutchman Jan Ballon Guenther in just 23 moves. Once Meenakshi managed to trade a rook for two knights and a pawn, Guenther looked completely lost. When Meenakshi threatened to advance one of her queenside pawns, Guenther found it futile to continue.
