CUDDALORE: The Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) has proposed to install a life-size bronze statue of Jambulinga Mudaliar in the Golden Jubilee Park of the Neyveli Township. According to NLC sources, the statue already erected at Mine-II some years ago got displaced owing to the shifting of the mining activity. Jambulinga Mudaliar was instrumental in the formation of the NLC. Having a great zeal for agriculture, he had converted vast stretch of barren lands in Neyveli and the surrounding areas into fertile lands. A committed educationist, he contributed a great deal for the spread of literacy among the rural populace. He occupied many posts such as the Chairman of Cuddalore Municipality, Zilla Board Chairman of the then South Arcot District, and member of the Academic Council of Annamalai University. The lignite deposit in Neyveli was a chance finding, when a borewell was being dug in his land in 1934, it issued forth blackish slush. He immediately contacted the then British Raj, which sent geologists to Neyveli to explore the spot. After it was conclusively proved that the lignite deposit was commercially viable, the NLC was formed under the then Madras Presidency. Later, the NLC became the public sector undertaking on November 14,1956 and a substantial portion of the sprawling complex belonged to Jambulinga Mudaliar.
