CHENNAI:
The Madras High Court on Tuesday ordered notice to the respondents on petitions filed by the Hindu Munnani and the Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, with regard to "Ramar Palam" otherwise known as Adams Bridge.
A Division Bench comprising Justices M.Jeyapaul and P.R.Shivakumar, ordered notice returnable by May 29, after hearing brief arguments by T.V.Ramanujun for the Hindu Munnani and Dr. Swamy and the Additional Solicitor-General of India, V.T.Gopalan.
In their petitions, Rama Gopalan, founder president of Hindu Munnani and Dr.Swamy had cited the Secretaries of Shipping and Tourism and Culture, Sethusamudram Corporation and the Archaeological Survey of India as respondents. The Munnani had cited T.R.Baalu, Union Shipping Minister, also as another respondent.
The Munnani petition said the entire length of Sethusamudram Canal is about 167 km. Dredging had been done in 54 km in Kodiakarai area. There was no necessity to dredge in another 78 km as the sea there was deep.
The dredging work in the remaining 35 km could be done without touching or tampering with the "Ramar Palam."
Dr.Swamy's petition said the project could go on without damaging the Rama Sethu.
