ANANTAPUR: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Tuesday ordered suspension of Sub-Inspector of Police of Kadiri urban police station, D. Raja, for his alleged role in the manhandling of Congress leader and APCC member C. Gopal Reddy on May 11 in Kadiri town. A delegation of Congress leaders from the district comprising Minister for Panchayat Raj J.C. Diwakar Reddy, DCC president P. Venugopal Reddy, Hindupur Mmember of Parliament G. Nizamuddin, Kadiri legislator J. Ramaiah, S. Sailajanath, Members of Legislative Council --G. Thippeswamy and Y. Sivarami Reddy-- called on the Chief Minister and demanded action against the police officer. On the night of May 11, Gopal Reddy of Gorantla constituency had an argument with in-charge DSP of Kadiri Gangaraju and some constables in a lodge in the town. Gopal Reddy was smoking a cigarette in the reception area. The DSP and constables were there in mufti. He was told not to smoke there, but the leader sought to know whether there was any signboard indicating ban on smoking. After a wordy duel with the DSP he was allegedly hit by the police officer first and was later rounded up by constables and beaten up. The SI was learnt to have reached the spot only after the incident.
