Action sought against erring drivers

Staff Reporter

Causalities on the National Highway on the rise

ALAPPUZHA: With causalities on the national highway, NH-47, on the rise in Alappuzha, the PWD Graduate Engineers' Association has demanded stringent action against erring drivers.

Association state treasurer P. Pushparajan, in a statement here, said the driving licence of frequent violators of traffic rules should be cancelled. Roads in bad condition, unscientific repair works, speeding and drunk driving were the key factors which led to accidents, he said.

The two-lane national highway that passed through the town was forced to bear a traffic density equal to that borne by a four-lane highway. Only a short stretch of the highway had been converted into four lanes so far.

With the monsoon round the corner, the number of accidents would only go up, the association said. Service roads and national highways should be converted into four lanes and measures taken to prevent accidents.
