Body of infant found in pit

THRISSUR: The body of a newborn baby was found in a pit near Government Medical College Hospital at Mulankunnathukavu on Tuesday. The police said the infant died on May 10 in the hospital and its parents, natives of Poomala, left the body in the pit. The Peamangalam police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Plea not to scuttle rehabilitation

Kozhikode: The Kozhikode district committee of the Kerala State Vyapari Vyavasayi Samthi has urged the traders not to scuttle the rehabilitation programmes being carried out at Sweetmeat Street where a fire broke out in April. Committee president K. Sreedharan and secretary C.K. Vijayan said the rehabilitation works were being carried out by the district administration, Kozhikode Corporation and voluntary bodies in a smooth manner. However, some organisations were trying to scuttle the works of the rehabilitation committee. — Staff Reporter

Four arrested

KOLLAM: The Kollam East police arrested a four-member gang on Monday on charges of car theft during a routine night patrol by a team led by Sub-Inspector Y. Kamaruddin. During the patrol, the team noticed the number plate of a car being altered. The four members were unable to provide satisfactory answers on being questioned. They were taken into custody and interrogated. They confessed to having stolen the car from Bangalore. The car was brought to Kollam on Monday. The accused have been identified as Mansoor Khan, Shiju, Ajayan and Kiran. They were produced before a court and remanded. — Staff Reporter

Demand for Azad chair in universities

Malappuram: The Moulana Azad Cultural Forum has demanded that a chair be instituted after Moulana Abul Kalam Azad at the universities of Calicut, Cochin and Kerala. A meeting of the State committee of the forum urged the Government to set up the chair in recognition of the Azad's contributions to the country in various spheres. Gopinath Chennara, president of the forum, presided over the meeting. — Staff Reporter

DYFI plans march

MALAPPURAM: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will take out a march to M.E.S. Medical College at Perinthalmanna on Thursday in protest against the "haughtiness" of the management. The DYFI in a statement here on Tuesday accused the management of behaving arrogantly, besides securing huge donations from students seeking admission to management seats. — Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: The Solidarity Youth Movement elected P. Mujeeb Rahman and K.A. Shafeek as its State president and general secretary respectively. Mr. Rahman belongs to Nilambur in Malappuram district and Mr. Shafeek to Pallana in Alappuzha district. — Staff Reporter

Award for freedom fighter

KASARAGOD: Former Speaker and Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran would present the inaugural award of TKK Foundation, Kanjangad to freedom fighter K. Madhavan at a function on May 16, at 3 p.m., office-bearers of the foundation have informed. Mr. Madhavan had played a yeoman service in building up the communist and the farmers movements in Malabar. He is the only living member of the volunteer group that participated in Guruvayur Satyagraha.
