KANNUR: The Licensed Engineers and Supervisors' Federation (LENSFED) has urged the Government to ensure that the Kerala Panchayat Building Construction Act is strictly enforced. Speaking at a press conference here on Tuesday, federation State general secretary P.O. Radhakrishnan said the authorities were showing laxity in enforcing the Act, which was essential for comprehensive and balanced development of the State. As a result, tax fixation on the basis of plinth area and provision for rainwater harvesting facilities were rendered impractical, he said. Mr. Radhakrishnan also alleged large-scale exploitation and propagation of superstitious beliefs in the name of `Vastu.' Common people were often being misled by Vastu practitioners with commercial interests, he said. The Government was taking no steps to popularise manufactured sand as an alternative to river sand being used for construction purposes, he said. District panchayat president K.K. Narayanan would inaugurate the district conference of the federation here on Wednesday, he added.
