Charat Ram passes away

Lala Charat Ram

NEW DELHI: Leading industrialist Charat Ram, Chairman of Shriram Pistons, died here on Tuesday. He was 89.

Lala Charat Ram, who had been ailing for the past few weeks, had a heart attack on Tuesday afternoon.

The cremation will take place at Nigambodh Ghat here on Wednesday.

Industry and corporate leaders have condoled the death of Lala Charat Ram who also served as president of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in 1973-74. They recalled his contributions to the growth and development of Indian industry.

In his message, FICCI president Habil Khorakiwala said that during Lala Charat Ram's tenure as the head of the chamber, he maintained that economic growth had to be so directed as to lead to larger employment opportunities and bring down disparities in income.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) said Indian industry had lost a doyen noted for his business acumen and simplicity of lifestyle.
