NEW DELHI: A massive "social audit" of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act will be held between May 14 and 21 in Ranchi. Hundreds of volunteers from Ranchi and elsewhere will walk from village to village, visiting NREGA worksites, verifying muster rolls and holding public meetings. The aim is to empower people to fight corruption and defend their rights under the Act. This is an initiative of "NREGA Watch," a coalition of organisations working for effective implementation of the Act in Jharkhand. Between May 20 and 24, a delegation of the Central Employment Guarantee Council will visit Jharkhand to review the implementation of the Act. The delegation will take part in the social audit on May 20 and 21. This will be followed by field visits on May 22, a public hearing in Ranchi on May 23 and consultations with the State Government on May 24. Members of the delegation include Aruna Roy of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan; Annie Raja of the National Federation of Indian Women; and Jean Dreze of Allahabad University. The public hearing will take place at the Administrative Training Institute, Ranchi, on May 23. Further details can be obtained from Balram (09934320657), Gopi (09431760032) or Gurjeet (09431120534).
