Kuruvilla consecrated CSI Bishop

KOZHIKODE: K.P. Kuruvilla was consecrated as the Bishop of the North Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India at a ceremony held at the CSI Cathedral at Mananchira here on Tuesday.

B.P. Suganthar, Moderator of the CSI, was the chief celebrant at the service that accompanied the installation of the new Bishop witnessed by a 1000-strong congregation comprising members of the Synod, Bishops, heads of sister churches, priests and devotees. The presentation of the Bible, and pastoral staff that symbolised the vesting of authority in the Bishop, besides the ring and a chain with cross enjoining the duties on the new head comprised the main part of the ceremony. The Holy Communion followed. S. Vasantha Kumar, CSI Deputy Moderator; Paulina Satyamurthy, general secretary; and V. Kasturi, treasurer were present.

Bishops J.W. Gladston, K.G. David, M. Dorai, Thomas Samuel and Yesuvasa Prasadam, and former Bishops of the North Kerala Diocese P.G. Kuruvilla and George Isaac, besides Marthoma Bishop Isaac Mar Pheloxinos joined in the blessing of the new bishop. Earlier, the Bishop-designate was led in procession from the B.E.M. Girls High School. This was followed by an opening prayer at the entrance of the church by Cathedral Vicar Paul David.

A high-power committee of the CSI Church Synod had nominated Rev. Kuruvilla as Bishop-designate.

Rev. Kuruvilla had served in various capacities as teacher in different seminaries in the country and was the Principal of the Kerala United Theological Seminary before being selected the seventh head of the diocese.

Rev. Suganthar inaugurated a public meeting held in connection with the consecration. Rev. Gladston presided. Abdus Samad Samdani, Rajya Sabha member; A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA; and Mayor M. Bhaskaran were among those who addressed the meeting.
