Woman, sons succumb to burns

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM : A woman and her two sons on Tuesday succumbed to burns they sustained in a fire in their house in Chitlapakkam near Tambaram last week.

Chitlapakkam police said Meena and her sons Dinesh Kumar and Ganesh Kumar died at a private hospital in the city on Tuesday.

On Friday, Meena (32) locked herself inside a room along with her two sons, Dinesh and Ganesh, aged 12 and 10 respectively, at her house in Gandhi Street, Chitlapakkam. She took a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder inside the room and allegedly turned it on after removing the tube. The smell of the cooking gas attracted the attention of her neighbours. They tried to help and also informed Meena's husband Selvam. When they tried to break open the door, Meena allegedly ignited a matchstick, resulting in an explosion and fire. The woman and her two children sustained severe burns and were rushed to hospital, where they died on Tuesday. According to Chitlapakkam police, Meena was depressed because of domestic problems.
