Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan's popularity seems to be at an all-time high following the Government's decisive action against land-grabbers in the ecologically fragile Munnar hill resort in Idukki district. The round-the-clock television coverage of the demolition process seems to have caught the public's imagination. Even buildings on properties encroached by local ruling front politicians, including party offices, are apparently not being spared. The media have dubbed the officers responsible for re-capturing the encroached Government land as the "three-man army." The "demolition squad" is headed by Special Officer K. Suresh Kumar, Inspector-General of Police Rishi Raj Singh and District Collector Raju Narayanaswamy. Speculations are rife in the media about those who have benefited from the land grab. Recently, the name of a noted Malayalam film actor was dragged into the scandal. Some newspapers have reported that the Chief Minister's drive is facing opposition from within his own front.
