BANGALORE: The United Nations World Food Programme is bringing to town two events "Golf for Hunger" and "Music for Hunger". The world's largest humanitarian aid agency has turned to the private sector to raise funds for its programmes aimed at eradicating hunger and malnutrition in the country.On May 18, the golf tournament tees off at the Bangalore Golf Club in the morning. It will feature prominent golfers from across the country, key government officials and celebrities from the city. The sporting event will be followed by a benefit concert in the evening featuring tabla maestro and music composer Bickram Ghosh. Bickram will present the concert along with his fusion band Rhythmscape. The concert is at 7 p.m. at the Chowdaiah Memorial Hall. The World Food Programme is being implemented in States including Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattishgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa, where they run schemes such as food for education, promotion of salt iodisation, food for work, HIV/AIDS technical assistance and capacity building, empowerment of adolescents for health promotion and HIV/AIDS prevention. The proceeds raised through the benefit events will go to these programmes. Registration is open for golf players who want to participate in the tournament.
