When mouse replaces the brush

One has more freedom in doing digital paintings than conventional art. Ask Saravanan M.A. about digital paintings. He lists the advantages such as the options to undo, delete or redo while working on a painting. A work can be copied and any number of prints taken with ease.

Saravanan, who runs an institute offering multimedia courses, is exhibiting 25 digital paintings at the Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery here.

"Both conventional paintings and digital paintings involve the same level of difficulty," says Saravanan as the glazing effect on a butterfly in one of the paintings grabs your attention. "One could get a glazing effect and more sharpness with digital painting. But mixing of colours will not be possible."

Why fewer people turn to digital paintings?

"All those who study graphic design are into it without caring much about digital paintings. There is less awareness about this medium — digital arts or painting — among people," he says.

Saravanan, a self-taught artist, is conducting his first exhibition. Smoke from incense sticks forms an image of Ganesha in one of the paintings.

He says that modern art can be done equally well digitally.

The show concludes on Thursday.
