Coimbatore: Four two-wheeler riders sustained injuries when a private bus lost control and hit them on Aatuppalam - Ukkadam road on Tuesday morning. Irate residents of the area blocked the road for nearly 15 minutes paralysing the traffic during the peak hour.

A private bus proceeding towards Coimbatore from Pollachi lost control and hit two-wheeler riders. In the accident, Nazeer Ahamed (43), Firdouse (18), Mohammed Azar (13) and Mohammed Usman (52) were injured. They were rushed to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

The residents and passersby smashed the windscreens of the bus besides beating up the driver Arumugam, who was later admitted to hospital.

The city police rushed additional reinforcements to the spot. The Traffic Investigation Wing Police arrested the driver and registered a case against him on the charges of `rash and negligent driving'. Later, the residents blocked the road demanding action against drivers indulging in rash and negligent driving.

The stretch had become accident-prone, they said and asked the authorities to construct a median on the road. The police officials held talks with the residents and promised them that steps would be taken to construct the median.

The police also made arrangements to conduct frequent `speed trap' checks on this stretch to discipline the drivers and prevent accidents.

As an ad-hoc measure, the police brought metal barricades and lined up them to divide the road.
