Coimbatore: A lawyer, Mohammed Rafiq, was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Tuesday evening following an alleged assault on him by a person suspected to be a policeman. Tension prevailed at the hospital when a large number of lawyers gathered there. Mr. Rafiq had been admitted to a private hospital on December 14, 2006, after he was allegedly attacked by a woman sub-inspector, a woman constable and an armed reserve constable. On December 15, the lawyers held a massive protest by blocking the road in front of the City Police Commissioner's office. On a complaint from the lawyer, City Police Commissioner C. K. Gandhi Rajan suspended the three and a magisterial inquiry was ordered into the incident. On Tuesday, the lawyer alleged that a person, who looked like a police constable, assaulted him, perhaps to intimidate him to make him withdraw his earlier complaint. Bar Association members visited him at the hospital. A meeting of the Association held later in the night decided to meet on Wednesday to discuss the further course of action, including a court boycott seeking action against the `police personnel' and justice for the `victim'.
