Lifecycle approach for bio-diesel plantations

HYDERABAD: Subhash Pani, Secretary (Rural Development), Government of India, on Monday proposed a lifecycle approach for taking up bio-diesel plantations, commencing with seed selection to application.

Delivering the keynote address at a two-day national seminar on role of vegetable oils as a source of energy for decentralised applications at Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Mr. Pani said that issues on whether to use vegetable oils for power generation or as a bio-fuel remained complex.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Acharya N.G. Ranga Agriculture University M. V. Rao favoured taking up of plantation on a commercial basis. Director-General of National Institute of Rural Development V. S. Sampath said that low-value millet crops could be replaced with crops like jatropha.
