Deadline set for petrol-driven autos to switch to LPG

Karthik Subramanian

CHENNAI: The State Government has set January 2008 deadline for petrol-driven autorickshaws in the city to switch to the eco-friendly and cost-effective liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). An order issued on Monday fixed the deadline. Vehicles registered and covered by permits granted by the Regional Transport Authority, Chennai, as well as the authorities in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, with endorsements to ply within the city limits, are covered under the G.O.

A total of 33,731 autorickshaws are required to shift to LPG under different deadlines: 5,000 vehicles registered in 2005-06 before July 31; 4,639 vehicles registered in 2004-05 before August 31; 5,001 vehicles registered in 2002-03 before September 30; 5,000 vehicles registered in 2001-02 before October 30; 4,163 vehicles registered in 2000-01 before November 30; 5,001 vehicles registered between 1997 and 1999 before December 31; and all vehicles registered before 1997 before January 31, 2008.

Officials of the transport department and national oil companies said LPG-fitted vehicles would have cost advantages.

According to oil industry estimates, 1.1 litre of LPG provides the same mileage as a litre of petrol.
