HYDERABAD: Protection of open spaces, proposals to develop them as parks or playgrounds, more public toilets and interaction with resident welfare associations were called for by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Commissioner and Special Officer, C.V.S.K. Sarma. Dr. Sarma on Tuesday undertook an inspection tour of some of the areas located in the erstwhile municipalities of Malkajgiri, Kapra and Uppal accompanied by Additional Commissioners of Works, Sanitation and Deputy Municipal Commissioners. In Malkajgiri, the Commissioner wanted immediate furnishing of details of the 140 open spaces and an action plan to develop them as parks and children playgrounds after protecting them with fencing. Dissatisfied over the delay in the construction of water tanks, reservoirs and other engineering works, he ordered officials concerned to contact the contractor to speed up the works on a priority basis. At Kapra, he made enquiries about the citizens' charter and stated that the meeting would be conducted with welfare associations in respective circles with regard to taking up issues like sanitation and door-to-door garbage collections. Dr. Sarma was witness to the slow pace of civic works in Uppal and also saw the need for widening of roads to ease traffic congestion. A meeting is to be held with HUDA, HMWSSB, R&B, Transco and others on May 22 for better coordination in civic related works, he added.
