11 `black spots' identified

Staff Reporter

Drunken driving, poor road conditions leading to accidents

HYDERABAD: City Traffic Police have identified eleven `black spots' where nine or more major accidents have occurred continuously for three years, apart from branding nearly 60 routes as `accident-prone' zones in twin cities.

Drunken driving, lack of dividers, bad road engineering, poor road conditions, electricity poles that were to be shifted after taking up road widening works and even abnormal height of the dividers were the major reasons behind the accidents, said traffic police.

While, drunken and negligent driving were causing more accidents in the core part of the city, lack of enforcement, bad road engineering like the Mettuguda- Rail Nilayam curve and lack of dividers on the Trimulgherry - Bolarum route aided in accidents on the city fringes, said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M. Punna Rao.

"We have already forwarded the list of identified routes and black spots to GHMC, Transport and Roads and Buildings departments. Presently we are analysing and working on the aspects to curb road accidents in twin cities," said Mr. Rao.

In all, 820-odd accidents were reported from the eleven identified black spots during the last three years and 213 the highest were reported on the DMRL, Santoshnagar - Chandrayangutta stretch.

"The idea is to control accidents. At a coordination meeting held recently, respective departments were asked to analyse and identify solutions, including re-engineering of roads, erecting of signboards etc," said Joint Transport Commissioner B. Venkateswarlu.

"Enforcement on drunken and negligent driving will be strengthened further through special drives in association with the traffic police," he added.
