HYDERABAD:
The Chatrinaka police on Tuesday recovered gold and silver jewellery worth Rs. 2.79 lakhs, which was burgled from the house of a police head constable at Mekalamandi in the old city a fortnight ago.
The burglar turned out to be B. Mahender, 24, a carpenter running a photo lamination shop in a rented room of the same house, the police said. Mahender had been running the shop in that house for the past six years and became close to the house owner's family members.
He cast his eyes on the gold and silver articles kept in a wooden almirah in the constable's house. When the house owner and his family members left for Yadagirigutta to attend a function, Mahender sneaked into the house by breaking open the lock on the main door and collected the valuables from the almirah.
When the house owner's family returned home and learnt about the burglary, he led them to believe that he was innocent. The police grew suspicious of his behaviour and took him into custody. He finally admitted to the offence, the police said.
