Incident took place at St. Vincent School in Sangam Vihar

NEW DELHI: Two unidentified assailants shot at and injured the 35-year-old Headmaster of St. Vincent Palloti Primary School at Sangam Vihar here on Tuesday. The victim has been admitted to Batra Hospital and is stated to be out of danger.

It all happened in the afternoon when two young man gained entry into the school premises on the pretext of collecting admission forms. When they were told that the Headmaster was not in office, the duo went away saying they would return soon.

The school staff then informed the Headmaster, Father George Philip, who got his office opened. The duo returned and met Father George in his office. After they were handed over the admission forms, one of them allegedly whipped out a firearm and fired thrice at Father George. One of the bullets hit him in the chest and another grazed past his head. The assailants then fled.

The profusely bleeding Headmaster screamed for help. Some women present inside the school informed the police, who rushed Father George to Batra Hospital. He was operated upon and the bullet was removed.

The police said initial investigations suggested that it was a case of attempted robbery and have launched a hunt for the culprits.

According to a Delhi Catholic Archdiocese release, Bishop Anil Couto of Jalandhar, Father George Manimala and Father Dominic Emmanuel went to the school on Tuesday afternoon to take stock of the situation. One of the culprits had come to the school on Monday and was asked to come on Tuesday along with the child for the admission, the release said.
