BANGALORE: "The lure of the malls will bring pushcart vendors closer to extinction," said one of the signs at a press conference held as part of a demonstration by pushcart vendors and owners of small shops against the entry of corporate giants into the retail sector. They were protesting against what they called the gradual encroachment of major corporates such as Reliance and Big Bazaar, as well as Walmart, which is due to arrive here soon, into the market by taking up the sale of vegetables, fruits, and other food products and strategically locating themselves in highly accessible areas like malls. D.V. Harish, from Bangalore Media Centre, was all set to fight for the cause of these pushcart vendors and proprietors of small provision stores, who he says have been affected by the advent of corporates. "Some 65,000 pushcart vendors in Bangalore alone have been affected and are slowly emigrating to other taluks and towns to earn their livelihood now," Mr. Harish added.
