Rehan Baig moves High Court for bail

Staff Reporter

  • Rehan is accused of having helped Abdul Kareem Telgi
  • CBI counsel says bail application copy not given to him

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court has adjourned an application for bail by Rehan Baig, brother of the former Minister and Congress MLA from Jayamahal Roshan Baig.

Rehan, along with several others, is accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of having helped Abdul Kareem Telgi, the prime accused, in the sale of fake stamp papers and fake embossing of documents in Karnataka.

Rehan, a doctor who has a Diploma in Pathology, is one of the accused in the City Market case in which he and several others were charge sheeted by the Stamp Investigation Team (STAMPIT — which was then investigating the case) for allegedly having helped Telgi in operating his multi-crore racket.

The CBI had registered a case against Rehan and five others in the City Market police station for illegal possession of inkpads, bottle containing red fluid and rubber seals belonging to the Deputy Director of Treasury and also for possessing fake stamp papers.

When the matter came up on Tuesday, senior Special Public Prosecutor for the CBI B.R. Nanjundaiah said a copy of the bail application had not so far been given to him. He said while he was the senior advocate representing the agency in the case, V.B. Sheelavant was the junior advocate.

The petitioner said he had already served a copy of the petition on another CBI counsel Ashok Harnahalli. Mr. Nanjundaiah clarified that he was appearing for the CBI in three cases relating to the fake stamp paper case.

Justice Jawad Rahim directed the petitioner to serve copies on Mr. Nanjundaiah and adjourned further hearing on the case.

    Rejected

The High Court on Tuesday rejected bail petitions by five directors of Viniv Inc, which is accused of having cheated thousands of depositors of crores of rupees.

In their petition, R. Krishnamurthy (58) of Nagendra Block, Banashankari 1st Stage, M.T. Jagannath (56) of V.V. Puram, I.V. Venkatakrishna (62) of Malleswaram, T.V. Sriranga (54) of Banashankari 3rd Stage and D.S. Krishnamurthy of Venkatadri had moved the court for bail, saying that they were not involved in the alleged misappropriation of funds belonging to the depositors.

State Public Prosecutor S. Dore Raju, opposed grant of bail saying that the directors were equally culpable and responsible for the acts of the founder director, Sreenivasa Shastry. Justice Jawad Rahim rejected the bail petitions.
