Policing schemes hanging fire

Staff Reporter

Corporation, administration yet to take final decision

KOCHI: Some of the high profile schemes of the police are hanging fire with the agencies involved taking their own steps to process the requests.

The police had suggested putting up surveillance cameras at important junctions, from where the traffic could be remotely monitored.

The idea behind setting up the system was to stretch enforcement beyond visible physical policing.

This proposal was accepted by the Corporation and funds were set apart in the budget. However, no progress had been made since then.

"Project reports need to be prepared, this has not been done. Even though the proposal was included in budget, the source for funds has not been identified till now. This is going to take some time," said Mayor Mercy Williams.

Memorial for victims

The police also placed a request with the administration to allot five cents near the boat jetty to set up a permanent memorial for accident victims.

"The plot identified is near the tourism boat jetty, so we have included it in the master plan being prepared.

We are planning to bring services of eminent artists to design the place," said Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish.

The police are also held back from setting up check-posts at the entry points to the city as part of the drive to curb crime.

"Some of the posts are coming up in neighbouring panchayats, so we have moved the application to them," said Manoj Abraham, City Police Commissioner.

The police are now maintaining a tight vigil at the entry points, like the first Goshree Bridge.

A special traffic police drive to check drunk driving is also aimed at vehicles carrying arms and anti-social elements. The drive is on between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.
