MP's plea

Special Correspondent

State Governments lack powers, says Narayanasamy

Puducherry: Chief Whip of the Congress in Rajya Sabha V. Narayanasamy, MP, has called upon the Union Health Ministry to take steps to curb the commercialisation of medical education by the private medical colleges in different parts of the country.

In a release here on Tuesday, he said that there were complaints that private medical colleges were extracting several lakh of rupees from students for admission. Although the managements were opening the colleges in States, they were not earmarking seats to the students of the States from whose Government they were enjoying all facilities.

He said State Governments lacked necessary powers to check the private managements from holding students to ransom. Hence, the Union Health Ministry should prevent the money-minded entrepreneurs from setting up professional colleges in the country.
