Shruthi upsets Valden

BANGALORE: State women's champion K. Shruthi defeated the sixth seed Petros Valden in the third round of the Malleswaram Association's FIDE rated chess championship here on Wednesday. Shruthi, with three points from as many rounds, thus joined the State champion N. Sanjay and 13 others in the lead.

In other upsets, R. Nagesh of Kumaran's School shocked the 12th seed Gavisiddaya of Best Engineering while P.P. Prachura held the former State champion Y.G. Vijendra to a draw. The State deaf and dumb champion M. Sudhish also did well holding FIDE rated Vishwaa Saralya to a draw.

The championship concludes on Sunday.
