Guwahati: The Assam Government has urged the Centre to rush 40 companies of Central paramilitary forces in the wake of fresh attacks on Hindi-speaking people by the United Liberation Front of Asom. A red alert has been sounded all over the State.Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said the paramilitary forces had been withdrawn from the State and deployed in Uttar Pradesh for election duty. Condemning the killings of five Hindi-speaking persons in Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts, he said the attacks were a sign of the ULFA's desperation. Mr Gogoi said the situation in upper Assam districts was under control but rumours were still doing rounds. The Chief Secretary was instructed to take up with Bihar the issue of security of passengers from Assam travelling in trains passing through that State, in the wake of the fresh attacks on Hindi-speaking people.
ULFA blamed
Mr. Gogoi blamed the ULFA and the People's Committee for Peace Initiative for the May 13 group clashes, between tea garden workers and protesters staging a road blockade against the killing of Budheswar Moran in Tinsukia district, leading to the death of six persons.
