THANJAVUR: The blood bank at Rajah Mirasudhar Government Hospital (RMH) here has been expanded with additional facilities such as room for collecting blood and donors' rest room. S. Balakrishnan, Dean of Thanjavur Medical College, inaugurated the facilities on Wednesday. Radhika Michael, blood bank officer, and R. Umamaheswari, Resident Medical Officer, RMH, were present. Dr. Balakrishnan said that the two rooms have been set up at a cost of Rs. 3 lakh. The blood bank now has space as specified by the Supreme Court. The Thanjavur Medical College Hospital has a modern blood bank and blood components can be separated and stored. Facilities for receiving and treating patients screened at `Varumun Kappom' camps in villages have been created at Thomas Hall, he said. "About 75 patients are referred to surgery from the camps every week," he said. Ms. Umamaheswari said that the RMH has been recording birth of 1,500 children every month. Blood is required for maternity cases with the daily requirement being 15 units. Dr. Balakrishnan declared open an intensive care unit at the Paediatrics Department later. At the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, Dr. Balakrishnan declared open a ward for diabetics. It has as many as 25 beds. S. Gurumurthy, Head of the Department of Diabetics, said that 900 outpatients were now being treated at the hospital.
