MADURAI: The final electoral rolls for Madurai West Assembly constituency were published here on Wednesday. The photo rolls would be displayed at all the 216 polling stations, office of the Electoral Registration Officer and the Corporation offices. Releasing the rolls, Collector S.S. Jawahar said that the rolls comprised 1,56,180 voters, including 78,649 women. "The images of 99.9 per cent of the electorate were captured. Hundreds of employees were involved in the exercise of addition, deletion and modification." Mr. Jawahar said that the electorate was 1,48,356 when the draft rolls were published on March 26, 2007. Of the 15,097 applications received for additions, 9,016 were accepted after scrutiny. "The Madurai West constituency is the first to achieve 99.9 per cent photo roll coverage in the State. Since the thrust was on preparing error-free rolls, several teams were deployed to crosscheck entries," Mr. Jawahar said. All recognised political parties would be given a hard copy and compact disc of the rolls. Of the 216 polling stations, 100 would be general and 58 each for men and women voters exclusively. About 3,000 persons were first-time voters, he said. Mr. Jawahar said that the Delimitation Commission would have a full day sitting covering the southern districts in Madurai on May 19. The by-poll for the Madurai West Constituency is likely to be held soon, official sources said.
