Ship-handling simulator launched

Staff Reporter

Kochi: Simulators have proved to be an inexpensive and effective method of training in near-realistic conditions.

The state-of-the-art, indigenously designed and manufactured replacement of the U.S.-made ship-handling simulator, phased out after 16 years of operations in November 2006, at the Navigation Direction School here, was inaugurated by Vice-Admiral Jagjit Singh Bedi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, on Wednesday.

The new simulator incorporates a ship's bridge, radar displays, electronic chart display system, various shipboard navigation and propulsion systems and an interactive instructor console.

It will enable trainees to practise the art of ship handling in different scenarios and environmental conditions in the open sea, within harbours and in restricted sea areas.

Captain B. Dasgupta, Officer-in-Charge ND School, welcomed the gathering and delivered the project report.
