Airport secures ISO certification

S. Anil Radhakrishnan

Efforts on to achieve eco-friendly atmosphere

Thiruvananthapuram: The premier airport of the State has turned environment-friendly and has become the second airport in South India to secure the environment management system compliance certificate under ISO 14001:2004.

The certificate comes a month after the Thiruvananthapuram international airport acquired the Director General of Civil Aviation's (DGCA) Aerodrome licence. The airport is the fourth in the country after Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Mangalore airports to obtain the ISO certificate.

The operating airlines, especially foreign airlines, look forward to such certification by international agencies to commence services.

"The certificate has given us the responsibility to create an awareness among the agencies working in the airport and also among the civic authorities and the public of the importance of environmental control management," Airport Director K. Natarajan told The Hindu .

The certificate was handed over by Principal Secretary (Transport) and Ex-officio Chairman of the Airport Environment Management Committee Jiji Thomson to Mr. Natarajan here on Wednesday.

The certificate had been issued by the Joint Accreditation system of Australia and New Zealand.

With this, the airport authorities and the user agencies would have to practise the Environment Management System (EMS) policy for achieving an environment-friendly atmosphere in around the airport.

Renewable energy

Mr. Natarajan said the airport authorities have commenced steps to save energy as per the EMS policy. Various agencies have started working on it. Efforts are on to use renewable sources of energy for catering to the needs of the airport.

The airport authorities have decided to approach a non-governmental organisation working in Chennai and Kudumbasree authorities to initiate steps to minimise waste generation.

The process for the certification commenced in 2006. The auditing of the airport was completed in March.

The agency had conducted auditing of Fire and Rescue Services, apron, engineering and electrical wings, among others.

The airport had secured the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System Compliance Certificate in September 2005.
