dated May 18, 1957: Nehru replies to critics

A vigorous defence of India's foreign policy was made by Prime Minister Nehru when he intervened in the debate on the President's address in the Lok Sabha on May 16. "I want to know from those who do not like this policy or ask us to do something else to tell us clearly what should be done," Mr. Nehru said. "In any event," he added, "India has to do her duty and not adopt tactics of bargaining in the market place. We have to see far and remember that whatever we do must be of a high order in keeping with our honour and glory." He referred to Goa and said there was not a shadow of doubt that it would be integrated with India in course of time. The Prime Minister told critics of the Government's Goa policy that any precipitate action involving armed intervention by India would amount to touching a hornets' nest.
