dated May 18, 1957: Steel plant for South India

The Government of India have tentatively decided to set up a steel plant in South India with a proposed target of three million tons annually. Another plant, expected to be set up at Bokaro, has been allocated a target of one and half million tons per year. The proposed plant in South India using lignite as fuel would be the biggest steel plant under the public sector.
