Letters to the Editor
This refers to the editorial "Difficulties of a fourth innings" (May 16). The clear majority for the Bahujan Samaj Party in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly is the culmination of Mayawati's years of hard work and performance. She is the first politician in recent times to have bridged the gap between the people of the forward castes and the backward sections. She has done what no political leader would dare to do these days. The victory itself is evidence of her confidence to run the government. There is no question of any `difficulties' whatsoever.
Pawan Kumar,
Single-party rule became possible in the most populous State when a party took visible action to overcome its obsession with caste. It is hoped that in due course, other parties will follow the BSP's example and embrace a sarvajan policy, so that reservation will be available to the economically weaker sections of all castes and the creamy layer will be excluded.
The editorial has rightly cautioned that governing well is even harder than winning elections. Of course, Ms. Mayawati has proved beyond doubt that she is a shrewd politician but she has yet to demonstrate that she is also an efficient and experienced administrator. Her electoral strategy has yielded rich dividends but her policy of political vendetta will prove counter-productive in the long run. She would do well to bear in mind that in politics, victory is never total.
