CHENNAI: An exhibition on ceramic heritage of south India and a demonstration on pottery making will form part of the observance of the International Museum Day by the Archaeological Survey of India on Friday. The ASI has chosen the subject of ceramics, as the theme of this year's celebration is "museums and universal heritage." The Survey's Fort Museum at Fort St. George will be the venue of the celebration. The purpose of the observance is to focus how cultural diversity and universal heritage go hand in hand. The International Council of Museums, the apex body for museum-related activities and which has declared May 18 as the Museum Day, has invited museums across the world and their communities. The objective is to show how people are individually and collectively responsible for sharing and protecting heritage, according to an official release issued by the ASI on Wednesday.
Pottery display
Pottery traced its origins to about 4,000 years ago in south India, the release said. The exhibition would display pottery from various sites such as Banahalli (Karnataka) and Adichanallur (Tamil Nadu). The public would be allowed to handle some of the ancient potsherd. A handout on Fort St. George will also be released on the occasion. It would serve as a guidebook for those who want to know the history of the Fort, the release added.
