United Sports Club enters pre-quarterfinals

Kayalpatnam: Host United Sports Club defeated Port Trust Football Club (Kochi) 6-5 in a tie-breaker to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the 42nd Maulana Abulkalam Azad memorial Trophy all-India football tournament here on Thursday.

At the regulation time, the teams were level 1-1.

Nithin scored for Port Trust in the 23rd minute and Abdul Kader netted the equaliser for United Sports Club in the 68th minute.

In the tie-breaker, Abdul Rehman, Buhari, Jamal, Yousuf and Sadak Omer scored for United Sports Club, while Abhijith, Rooming, Iynist and Renish scored for the visitor.

TDHA posts win

At Kovilpatti, a goal by Sivaselvam in the 36th minute helped Tuticorin District Hockey Association defeat Jothi Sports Club (Palayamkottai) 1-0 in the preliminary rounds of the second annual K.N. Subbaraj memorial Trophy all-India hockey tournament at the G.K. Stadium on Thursday. In another match, a brace each by Rajagopal and Pradeep and one goal each by Ramasamy and Satheesh helped Tiruchi District Hockey Association defeat SSOS (Sangagiri) 6-2. Dinesh scored both the goals for the Sangagiri team.

Armed Police advances

At Periakulam, Armed Police (Chennai) moved into the pre-quarterfinals of the P.D. Chidambara Sourya Narayanan memorial Trophy all-India basketball tournament with a 77-64 victory over Sethu Basketball Club (Madurai) late on Wednesday.

Ramachandran scored 25 points for the police team, while Jai Ganesh scored 21 points for Sethu Club.

Third round: Armed Police, Chennai 77 (Ramachandran 25, Robin 23, Arun 12) bt Sethu BC, Madurai 64 (Jaiganesh 21, Prakash 18); Sports Hostel of Excellence, Chennai 105 (Puviarasan 18, Ananda Krishnan 18, Praveen 18, Prabhakaran 17) bt Breeze BC, Dindigul 72 (Sathish 16, Balakrishnan12).
