NEW DELHI: Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi drew with Armenia's Avetik Grigoriyan in 35 moves in the opening round of the World youth stars chess tournament in Kirishi, St. Petersburg, in Russia, on Wednesday. In this select field of 12 young talents from the chess world, top-seeded Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi drew in 45 moves with second-seeded Azerbaijani Rauf Mamedov. In the two surprise results, Russia's Eduard Gorovykh, the lowest-ranked player in the field, stunned third-seeded Ukrainian Yuriy Kuzubov and Germany's Falco Bindrich upstaged defending champion and fifth seed Russia's Ivan Popov. The results (first round): Avetik Grigoryan (Arm) drew with Parimarjan Negi; Falco Bindrich (Ger) bt Ivan Popov (Rus); Zaven Andriasian (Arm) bt Eltaj Safarli (Aze); Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rus) drew with Rauf Mamedov (Aze); Eduard Gorovykh (Rus) bt Yuriy Kuzubov (Ukr); Sergie Zhigalko (Bel) drew with Daniil Lintchevski (Rus).
