`Give our Rani her due'

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: The former Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president V.S. Koujalgi, the former MP Amarsinh V. Patil and the former legislator Shyam B. Ghatage have urged the Centre to "correct and rectify the historical blunder being committed on the floor of Parliament" with regard to the decision of the Union Government to celebrate the "Indian Rebellion of 1857" as the "First War of Indian Independence".

In a letter to the Prime Minister, they have said it was Rani Chennamma of Kittur who, in 1824, waged the first war of independence. But, in all Union Government documents and Parliament archives it has been wrongly mentioned that it was Rani of Jhansi who led the first war of independence in 1857.

The sentiments of the people of Karnataka, and Belgaum district in particular, have been hurt by the wrong representation of history by MPs, they have said.
