HYDERABAD: Vijayawada recorded a maximum temperature of 46 degree Celsius for the first time this summer even as coastal Andhra virtually became a cauldron due to the severe heat wave conditions continuing in different parts of the State. Almost the whole of the State was in the grip of the heat wave on Thursday as north-westerly dry winds from the Rajasthan desert continued to sweep the State. Several towns in the coastal belt, including Bapatla, Machilipatnam and Rajahmundry, recorded temperatures close to 46 degree C affecting normal life and forcing people to stay indoors. The main thoroughfares in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Kavali, Kakinada, Narsapur, Guntur, Nellore and a number of other places wore a deserted look. Reports of sunstroke deaths continued to pour in from different places, but the Medical & Health Department, which is monitoring these casualties, is yet to confirm them. Dry weather prevailed across Rayalaseema and Telangana where the day temperatures crossed 44 degree Celsius. Hyderabad, however, recorded 40.6 degree Celsius. State Met Office Director M. Satya Kumar said the severity of the heat wave was likely to continue for two more days. Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur, Krishna, East and West Godavari district administrations have been put on alert.
