No stay on wheat import
Legal Correspondent
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to pass an order to restrain the Centre from importing one million tonnes of wheat in suitable tranches by July.
A Bench of the Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice R.V. Raveendran after hearing counsel for the petitioner Pinky Anand and Solicitor General G.E. Vahanvati posted the application for further hearing in July. The Bench asked the petitioner's counsel: "who will be responsible if there is shortage of wheat if we stay the import? If you have grievance on low minimum support price, you make a representation. We cannot interfere." The court in August 2006 had issued notice to the Centre on a petition filed by Vandana Siva.
