Manmohan re-elected to Rajya Sabha

GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was on Thursday re-elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Assam for the fourth consecutive term after independent candidate Matang Singh withdrew from the contest.

Mr. Matang Singh was backed by the Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF). AUDF president Badaruddin Ajmal said his party decided to request Mr. Matang Singh to withdraw so that the Prime Minister could be elected unopposed.

Asom Gana Parishad candidate Kumar Dipak Das was also elected unopposed to the Upper House from the other seat.

AGP president Brindaban Goswami said the victory would strengthen the voice of the regional party in Parliament.
