TIRUPATI: The South Central Zone Cultural Centre, Nagpur, will conduct a two-day folk dance festival and a five-day workshop on traditional painting and sculpture here, beginning May 18. The centre, under the Union Ministry of Culture, regularly conducts such programmes across Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra to facilitate cultural exchange among the member-States. Tirupati is playing host to the workshop for the first time. Fifteen painters and sculptors of national repute from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Orissa, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh are participating in the eight-day camp, to be conducted in association with the Tirupati-based `Sri Kala Kshetram' at the TTD's Sri Venkateswara Institute of Traditional Sculpture and Architecture premises. Popular folk and tribal dance forms like Banjara Nritya, Bonalu, Dhimsa, Lambadi Nritya, Gondi and Ghusadi Nritya, apart from `Chindhu Bhagavatham' will be presented by four dance troupes at the sprawling ISKCON grounds. "Our aim is to showcase the rich, colourful and vibrant culture of the State and popularise it among other regions," J.P.Gupta, Director of the centre, said at a media conference here on Thursday. TTD's Executive Officer K.V.Ramanachary will inaugurate the workshop.
