Bangalore: The Karnataka Joint Action Committee of Backward Classes, Dalits and Minorities on Thursday demanded separate reservation under category 2A in the backward classes list for the majority of the 101 castes in it, as 80 per cent of the seats in colleges, posts and economic benefits had been garnered by a few castes such as Kurubas and Idigas. Speaking to presspersons, committee president Krishna Nayak, convener Kakolu Lakkappa and women's cell president Leela Ramakrishna said that influential castes such as Kurubas and Idigas should be brought under a separate category. The smaller castes should no more be clubbed with them as the injustice to the 95 and odd smaller castes would continue, the office-bearers added. According to them, castes such as Agasa, Devadiga, Kumbara, Nayinda, Bouddha, Thigala, Vishwakarma, Darje, Devanga, Neyge, Pattegara, Ganiga, Somavamsha Kshatriya, Raju Kshatriya and Amma Kodava should be accorded separate status under the same category. The Balija caste, which has been included in category 3A, had remained backward. It should be taken out of it and listed separately. Mr. Nayak said the committee was going to organise a seminar here on May 20 to discuss the problems of the most backward classes and find a solution to them.
