Mangalore to get Rs. 200-crore grant

M. Raghuram

A boost for development work

  • Data being collected on different aspects of the city
  • Projects under new scheme to being after two years

MANGALORE: Mangalore city will get a grant of Rs. 200 crore under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns of the Union Government. The grant, which comes in the wake of the completion of the urban infrastructure development projects by the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), is expected to give a further boost to development work in Mangalore.

Sources in the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) told The Hindu that the corporation had started collecting data pertaining to the city in a wide range of areas. It was already halfway through the process, and a complete databank would be sent to the Government by July-end, they added.

The grant, which may be routed through the State Government, will be managed by the KUIDFC. Widening of roads, laying of drainage pipelines, improvement of the water distribution system, finding alternative sources of water, improvement of transport carriageways, illumination, conservation of water bodies, and disaster management are among the projects that will be taken up under the new scheme.

MCC has asked various departments to supply data relating to different aspects of the scheme. However, it would take not less than two years for the work to actually begin, the sources added.
