SHRC seeks report on lake contamination

Commission takes cognisance ofThe Hindureport

CHENNAI: Taking a serious view of a press report on contamination of Madipakkam lake, on the city's suburbs, the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has asked the authorities to send a report within three weeks.

A Full Bench of the Commission, headed by the Chairperson, Justice A.S.Venkatachalamoorthy, took suo motu cognisance of a report "Action sought to halt pollution of lake" published in The Hindu on May 14. The report said the residents and activists had urged the Government to take steps to prevent contamination of the lake.

The rights body ordered issue of notice to the District Collector, Kancheepuram and the Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Chennai, to enquire and send a report to the State Human Rights Commission.
