CHENNAI : Thomson Scientific, the Thomson Corporation arm that assists professionals in various stages of research and development, on Thursday said it would move editorial operations to Chennai from centres abroad. It would be looking to hire around 500 employees, including experienced professionals and scientific researchers from leading educational institutions, over the next few months. Senior vice president-editorial operations of Thomson Scientific Stephen Quinn said Chennai was chosen, after a survey of 19 cities in the region, for its ability to attract qualified individuals who can be retained over the long term. The organisation has partnered recently with the Indian patent authorities in recognition of the fact that India and China were seeing a spurt in the number of inventions, he said. Thomson Scientific also provides clients with abstracts of patents and some 10,000 scientific journals. The Thomson Corporation provides information and software tools and applications to professionals in fields such as law, tax, accounting, financial services, scientific research and healthcare. The Corporation employs more than 2,000 people in Bangalore and 150 in Hyderabad. Thomson Scientific also has Indian clients, Mr. Quinn said. It has worked out a strategy to enter the domestic market, he said.
