Chennai in the race to host FIFA run-up matches

Staff Reporter

Chennai: Chennai is in the race to host the preliminary matches of the FIFA World Cup.

An enquiry team headed by Dell Akbar Khan, a representative of Federation Internationale de Football Association, was here on Friday to look at the city's potential to host the preliminary rounds, scheduled for January and February 2008.

The team met Mayor M. Subramanian, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, City Police Commissioner Letika Saran and officials of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. All India Football Association general secretary Alberto Colaco and Tamil Nadu Football Federation president C. R. Viswanathan accompanied Mr. Khan during his inspection of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

"The enquiry team seems pleased with the stadium. The only lacunae is that there are no practice fields for international players to train here," Mr. Viswanathan said.
