Malayalis can now enjoy a `foreign taste' while consuming biscuits, chocolates, cookies, etc., bought from their neighbourhood baker, as those involved in the bakery and confectionary industry in the State are all set to adopt modern and futuristic practices to stave off competition from the multinational companies' foray into this sector. The Bakers' Association of Kerala has sent a 25-member delegation to China to participate in the `Bakery China Exhibition 2007,' which would be attended by delegates from all over the world, Naushad Royal, district secretary of the Association said. The delegation from Kerala, comprising bakery owners from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur, is part of about 3,000 bakers from India attending the exhibition.
Baking practices
"In an era of globalisation when multinational companies are increasingly venturing into the field, we have decided to adopt modern baking practices while preserving our traditional taste," he said. The week-long exhibition will have three days completely dedicated to exhibition of bakery products while three days would be set apart for education on modern baking practices and equipment, besides visits to colleges offering courses related to the bakery industry, he said. The Association, which was launched two years ago, is arranging such a visit for the second time in as many years, Mr. Naushad said. Last year, a delegation was sent to Germany, he said. According to him, the total strength of bakers' community in Kerala would be about one lakh of which around 20,000 were members of the Association, he said. The delegation bound for China was accorded a send-off by the Association. The group left for China on Tuesday night.
